Say No to Child Labour
Child labour is giving work to children who are underage so that they can earn money for themselves or their families. It is a serious problem because it can cause great harm to children and sometimes force them to do donkey work. Believe it or not, the work is often unfair, dangerous and sometimes so severe and hard that children cannot handle it. It may stop them from going to school, playing and growing up in a safe and happy way. This can deny them the right to education, growing and improving themselves. Without proper education, it can be hard for them to prepare for a career later in life.
Child labour can appear in many different ways, such as working on farms, in homes or in factories. You may also see a child, busy as a bee, selling groundnuts on the streets. Any work that denies a child their basic rights, like the right to go to school, to play or to sleep well, is child labour. Some people think it is a good idea to let children work to help their families. Remember, as the proverb warns, ‘Not all that glitters is gold.’ Some of it is rust under the golden shine. Just because a child is earning money does not mean it is good for them. It is still child labour because it denies them their rights. Children should not do work that denies them the right to play and to be children.
Even a job, like doing work in the house or taking care of a baby, if done by a child who should be in school, is considered child labour. Children need care, education and freedom to play and rest. That is why we must say NO to child labour.
