Miraculous nature of the Qur’an

A miracle is an act produced by Allah (S.W.T.) that cannot be imitated by anyone. The Qur’an is a miracle revealed to Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.). Its language is excellent and soothing to the heart and mind. Allah (S.W.T.) challenged the human beings and jinn to produce a book similar to the Qur’an. Labid bin Rabi’ah, an Arab poet at the time of the Prophet (S.A.W.) wrote a few lines that failed to match the Qur’an. He was imitating the verses of Surah al - Fiil.

He wrote:

Activity 1: Working in groups

  1. Using Islamic books or internet, search for the miraculous nature of the Qur’an.
  2. Present your findings on charts or PowerPoint.

Activity 2: Working as a class

  1. Read the verses below from different surah and identify their miraculous nature of the Qur’an.

Verily We: It is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Qur’an) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption). (Qur’an 15:9)

And it is He who has created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon, each in an orbit floating.
(Qur’an 21:33)

This is what We recite to you (O Muhammad S.A.W.) of the verses and the Wise Reminder (the Qur’an).
(Qur’an 3:58)

An Arabic Qur’an, without any crookedness (therein) in order that they may fear Him.
(Qur’an 39:28)

Do they not then consider the Qur’an carefully? Had it been from other than Allah, they would surely have found therein much contradictions.
(Qur’an 4:82)

Neither did you (O Muhammad S.A.W.) read any book before it (this Qur’an), nor did you write any book (whatsoever) with your right hand. In that case, indeed, the followers of falsehood might have doubted.
(Qur’an 29:48)

“And if you are in doubt concerning that which We have sent down to our slave, then produce a surah of the like thereof and call your witnesses besides Allah, if you are truthful. But if you do it not, and you can never do it, then fear the fire whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.” (Qur’an 2:23–24)

  1. Prepare a chart with the verses on the miraculous nature of the Qur’an. Present your work to the teacher for checking.

  1. Find out the miraculous nature of the Qur’an contained in the verses below: (Qur’an 2:1, 2:23–24 and 81:27).
  2. Present your findings in class on charts.

Language of the Qur’an

Activity 1: Working in groups

  1. Using available Islamic books or the internet, search for verses on the language of the Qur’an.
  2. Make class presentation of your findings.

Activity 2: Working in pairs

  1. Read the verses below.

“Verily, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’an in order that you may understand.”
(Qur’an 12:2)

“A Book whereof the Verses are explained in detail; A Qur’an in Arabic for people who know.”
(Qur’an 41:3)

  1. Identify the language of the Qur’an from the above verses.

Activity 3: Reading Time

  1. In turns, read the following points on the characteristics of the language of the Qur’an.
    1. The language is easy to comprehend.
    2. The language of the Qur’an is pure Arabic based on Quraysh dialect.
    3. The verses have an effect on the hearts of the readers.
    4. It uses singular and plural pronouns referring to Allah (S.W.T.).
    5. The language used contains verses with disjointed letters whose meaning is only known by Allah (S.W.T.).
  2. Copy the points in your exercise book.

The style of the Qur’an

Activity 1: Reading Time

The Qur’an has the following styles:

Similes (Amthaal)

These are parables with comparisons intended to make human beings reflect on the message of the Qur’an. Read the verse below and identify the similitude used.

The likeness of those who take Auliya’ (protectors and helpers) other than Allah is as the likeness of a spider, who builds (for itself) a house, but verily, the frailest (weakest) of houses is the spider’s house; if they but knew.
​(Qur’an 29:41)

Activity 2: Working in groups

  1. Search from the Qur’an or internet and discuss other verses that contain similitudes.
  2. Copy the verse in your exercise books.

Repetition

Activity 3: Working in pairs

Some verses in the Qur’an have been repeated to emphasise on their message.

In Surah Ash-Sharh, verses five and six have been repeated as shown below:

So verily, with the hardship, there is relief.
(Qur’an 94:5)

Verily, with every hardship, there is relief.
(Qur’an 94:6)

  1. Identify the words that have been repeated.
  2. Copy the above verses in your exercise book.
  3. Identify words or verses that are repeated in the surah below;
    1. Surah al- Qari’a
    2. Surah at-Takaathur

Rhetorical questions

Rhetorical questions are used to motivate readers to reflect on their beliefs and behaviour and to think carefully about the meaning of the verse.

Activity 1: Working individually

Below is an example of a verse that contains a rhetorical question.

  1. Study it and identify the rhetorical question.
  2. Copy the verse in your exercise book and its meaning.

Is one who is obedient to Allah, prostrating himself or standing (in prayer) during the hours of the night, fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the Mercy of his Lord (like one who disbelieves)? Say: “Are those who know equal to those who know not?” It is only men of understanding who will remember (that is, get a lesson from Allah’s Signs. (Qur’an 39:9)

Activity 2: Working as a class

  1. Reflect on the meaning of the rhetorical question in Qur’an 39:9.
  2. Search for other verses in the Qur’an with rhetorical questions and share the meaning with other learners in your class.

Oaths (Aqsaam)

Activity 3: Working in groups

  1. Use a dictionary to search for the meaning of the word oath.
  2. Share your findings with the class.

Activity 4: Reading Time

Read the explanation below on oaths.

Aqsaam are oaths used to show the Greatness and Might of Allah (S.W.T.) as the creator of everything He swears by. Oaths also draw the attention of the reader to the importance of the creations of Allah (S.W.T.). The verses below show examples of oaths found in the Qur’an.

By the dawn

And by the ten nights
(Qur’an 89:2)

And by the even and the odd
(Qur’an 89:3)

And by the night when it departs.
(Qur’an 89:4)

  1. Discuss Qur’an 89:1– 4.
  2. Identify the items that Allah (S.W.T.) swears by.
  3. Copy the verse in your exercise book.

Rhyme

Activity 1: Reading Time

  1. Listen to your teacher as he or she explains the meaning of the word rhyme.
    ​Rhyme is repetition of syllables or sounds in a word at the end of a verse. Rhyme brings rhythm when reciting the verses giving it beauty and a calming effect. It creates a smooth and appealing mood to the reader or listener.
  2. Take turns to read the verse below on rhyme.

Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree.
(Qur’an 97:1)

And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree?
(Qur’an 97: 2)

The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.
(Qur’an 97: 3)

The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter.
(Qur’an 97:4)

Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.

  1. Read the meaning of the term narratives below. These are stories in the Qur’an about the past prophets, generations and events meant to offer lessons to human beings.
  2. Find out the chapters that narrate the stories below:
    1. The story of the Nabii Yusuf
    2. The story of as-habul kahf (companions of the cave)
